Workforce Engagement & Legacy Benefits

At HMIS, we pride ourselves on taking care of those who have supported the Department of Energy and Hanford. The Hanford Workforce Engagement Center (HWEC) is a collaborative partnership between the Department of Energy, Hanford Site contractors and labor. HMIS is also responsible for the Legacy Benefits Plan Administration for retirees and former employees of the DOE’s closed Fernald, Mound and Rocky Flats sites.

HANFORD WORKFORCE ENGAGEMENT CENTER
HWEC is a premier service center staffed with experienced representatives equipped to help current and former Hanford employees and their families who have questions or concerns about occupational health issues.

hwec It can be difficult to navigate the many processes and programs available when you have an occupational health concern. HWEC can help you make the right connections and identify where to obtain the information you need. Staffers can help educate and get you on the right track if you encounter an issue with a claim or process.

HWEC can help with claims or questions related to the following programs:

  • The Department’s Workers’ Compensation Program
  • The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA)
  • The Former Workers Medical Screening Program
  • Beryllium sensitization or Chronic Beryllium Disease
  • The State of Washington Workers’ Compensation Program
  • Hanford contractor specific programs

The HWEC staff have extensive backgrounds working at Hanford in both union and non-union positions.

LEGACY BENEFITS PLAN ADMINISTRATION
HMIS is responsible for administration of DOE’s Legacy Benefit Plans & Legacy Workers’ Compensation Plan for retirees and former employees of the DOE’s closed Fernald, Mound and Rocky Flats sites.

FERNALD WELFARE BENEFITS PLAN
The former Feed Materials Production Center in Harrison, Ohio, was a uranium processing facility that produced high-purity uranium metal products as the first step in America’s nuclear weapons production cycle. The site’s production mission began in 1951 and continued until 1989, when production operations ceased and Fernald’s mission changed to environmental remediation. The comprehensive remediation and ecological restoration of the site was completed (with the exception of groundwater) and the site closed in 2006.  For information on Former Fernald Workers’ Employment Verification and Benefits, click here.

MOUND

MOUND WELFARE BENEFITS PLAN
The Mound site in Miamisburg, Ohio, operated from 1948 to 2003, as part of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and later the DOE, to continue Manhattan Project work on polonium-beryllium initiators used in early atomic weapons. Later, the site was expanded to an integrated research, development, and production facility supporting weapons, energy, and space missions. ROCKY

ROCKY FLATS WELFARE BENEFITS PLAN
The former Rocky Flats Plant was part of the nationwide complex that manufactured nuclear weapons components under the jurisdiction and control of DOE and its predecessor agencies. From 1952 to 1994, the Plant’s primary mission was producing nuclear and nonnuclear weapons components for America’s nuclear arsenal. After the facilities mission changed to cleanup and closure and was renamed the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site. In 2005, DOE and its contractor completed an accelerated 10-year cleanup of chemical and radiological contamination in production buildings and areas across the site after nearly 50 years of production activities.  For information on Rocky Flats Benefits Administration, click here.
